Con l’espressione ‘Medio Evo’ si vuole indicare l’epoca storica di passaggio tra l’età antica e quella moderna, tra il 476 (anno della caduta dell’impero romano d’Occidente), ed il 1492 (anno della scoperta dell’America). Il termine viene talvolta richiamato con senso dispregiativo, quasi rispecchiasse un’epoca in certo modo retriva dimenticando, forse, che nella sua ultima parte (metà Trecento e tutto il Quattrocento) produsse l’Umanesimo, un movimento culturale caratterizzato da rinnovata centralità dell’uomo e dell’opera umana e dal ricupero della civiltà spirituale e letteraria greco-latina. Lo studio proposto vuole offrire una lettura sintetica di quel periodo, analizzando alcuni dei principali protagonisti di quel rinnovamento che aprì le porte alle splendide conquiste del Rinascimento.

The expression “Middle Ages” indicates the period between ancient and modern history, the period between 476 (the date of the fall of Roman Empire in the West) and 1492 (the year of the discovery of America). This term is sometimes used in a disparaging sense, as if it indicated a backward period while perhaps it is forgotten that perhaps in its latter part it produced Humanism, a cultural movement whose main characteristic was the renewed centrality of the human being, human activity and the revival of the spiritual and literary civilization of Greece and Rome. This study offers a concise study of that period by analyzing some of the chief protagonists of this renewal which opened the door to the splendid conquests of the Renaissance.
