I cristiani del XXI secolo sono afflitti dalle stesse patologie, tentazioni e sfide degli altri uomini e donne con cui viviamo nella nostra società. La fiamma della fede, la gioia di vivere, spesso si spegne e noi abbandoniamo lo sforzo, la lotta e la vigilanza. In questo frangente, papa Francesco ha alzato la voce per dirci che: «Il Signore chiede tutto e ciò che offre è la vera vita, la felicità per cui siamo stati creati. Egli ci vuole santi e non si aspetta che ci accontentiamo di un’esistenza mediocre, annacquata, liquefatta» (GE 1). Questo è il messaggio che san Francesco di Sales ha inviato alla Chiesa del suo tempo: santità per tutti, santità in ogni stato e condizione, santità nella vita quotidiana. Questo è forse il suo contributo più importante alla spiritualità cristiana, la sua eredità. Si potrebbe dire che la santità che il vescovo di Ginevra e papa Francesco proclamano all’unisono è la santità che si vive e si realizza nella vita quotidiana, nella routine di ogni giorno. È accessibile a tutti perché non è altro che l’amore di Dio. L’obiettivo di questo articolo è far emergere la novità e l’attualità della chiamata alla santità, fatta a suo tempo da san Francesco di Sales, alla luce dell’appello lanciato da papa Francesco a «incarnarla nel contesto odierno con i suoi rischi, le sue sfide e le sue opportunità»

Christians in the 21st century are beset by the same pathologies, temptations and challenges as the other men and women with whom we live in our society. The flame of faith, the joy of living, is often extinguished, and we abandon effort, combat and vigilance. At this juncture, Pope Francis has raised his voice to tell us: “The Lord asks for everything and what he offers is true life, the happiness for which we were created. He wants us to be saints and does not expect us to settle for a mediocre, watered-down, liquefied existence” (GE 1). This is the message that Saint Francis de Sales sent to the Church in his time: holiness for all, holiness in every state and condition, holiness in everyday life. This is perhaps his most important contribution to Christian spirituality, his legacy. One could say that the holiness that the Bishop of Geneva and Pope Francis proclaim in unison is the holiness that is lived and realised in everyday life, in the routine of each day. It is accessible to all because it is nothing other than the love of God. The aim of this article is to bring out the newness and relevance of the call to holiness, made in his time by Saint Francis de Sales, in the light of the call made by Pope Francis to “incarnate it in today's context with its risks, challenges and opportunities”
