Il rinnovato interesse per la pratica del discernimento esige una solida comprensione teorica (e storica), che non può limitarsi ad un sommario accostamento alla phrónesis. In realtà, è proprio il rapporto tra discernimento-discretio da un lato, e virtù di prudenza-phrónesis dall’altro, che esige di essere indagato fino in fondo. Non si tratta di due modelli alternativi o concorrenziali, ma nemmeno del tutto equivalenti: il dispositivo del discernimento va integrato nella struttura complessiva dell’atto umano, a cui presiede la virtù di prudenza; all’interno di essa, il discernimento si realizzerà come deliberazione prudenziale.

Partendo dalla ricostruzione della nozione di discretio in Cassiano e in Riccardo di San Vittore, lo studio mette in luce gli elementi irrinunciabili del discernimento, i presupposti da cui muove, la necessità di una stretta adesione alla struttura dell’atto umano, la possibilità di una feconda integrazione con la virtù di prudenza, nonché con l’azione della grazia (virtù infuse e doni dello Spirito Santo). Ne emergono aspetti preziosi per elaborare una aggiornata dottrina della prudenza, di cui la teologia morale ha oggi assoluta necessità

The current interest in the practice of discernment requires a sound theoretical (and historical) understanding, which cannot be limited to approximate the virtue of phrónesis. Effectively, it is the relationship between discernment-discretio on the one hand, and the virtue of prudence-phrónesis on the other, that needs to be investigated thoroughly. These two models are not alternative nor competitive, but neither are they totally equivalent: discernment must be integrated into the overall structure of the human act, guided by the virtue of prudence; within it, discernment will take place as a prudential deliberation.

Moving from the notion of discretio in Cassiano and Riccardo di San Vittore, the study highlights the crucial elements of discernment, its assumptions, the need for its close adherence to the structure of the human act, its fruitful integration with the virtue of prudence, as well as with the action of grace (infused virtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit). Valuable aspects emerge in order to develop an updated doctrine of prudence, of which moral theology is absolutely in need today
