Nel Dictionnaire de spiritualité, alla parola “Joseph (Saint)” si legge: “[Francesco di Sales] le sue riflessioni nelle lettere e nelle prediche, specialmente nel suo 19° Entretien, mostrano una pienezza di dottrina e una profonda pietà che egli comunicò a Jeanne de Chantal e alle Visitandine”. Una domanda legittima che ci si può porre è: «Quale immagine di San Giuseppe è rappresentata da Francesco di Sales nelle sue opere?». L’articolo inizia con una breve presentazione della devozione e dello studio di Giuseppe, a partire dal Medioevo fino alla fine del XVI secolo. Analizza poi i luoghi in cui Giuseppe è menzionato nelle opere del vescovo di Ginevra. Questo permette di discutere in dettaglio il modo in cui egli rappresenta san Giuseppe. A legitimate question one might ask is: “What image of Saint Joseph is portrayed by Francis de Sales in his works?” The article begins with a brief presentation of the devotion to and study of Joseph, starting from the Middle Ages to the end of the 16th century. It then analyses where Joseph is mentioned in the works of the bishop of Geneva. This permits to discuss in detail the way he represents Saint Joseph. This transversal and thematic reading of the Œuvres de Saint François de Sales, èdition complète, Annecy, allows to get a clear picture of the idea and the way Joseph is used by the bishop in his writings and also to become acquainted with Francis’ beautiful lexicon. Joseph is used by Francis mainly for pastoral purposes and is presented as a father, husband and the righteous, but also as the obedient and humble man who trusted in Divine Providence.
