La riflessione teologica inerente al lavoro rientra nella teologia delle realtà terrestri, inaugurata in epoca pre-conciliare, relativa al matrimonio e famiglia, alla politica e al lavoro. Mentre le prime due aree sono state cospicuamente assunte dalla recente indagine teologica, il lavoro è stato meno sviluppato. Al problema etico della condizione dei lavoratori, su cui si è tradizionalmente concentrata la Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa, va coniugata l’indagine teologica sul senso dell’attività lavorativa. In questa cornice si profila l’urgenza d’istruire una rinnovata riflessione attinente al senso del lavoro, di cui si vuole rendere conto nel presente contributo. A tal fine, lo studio si articola in tre parti: nella prima si offre una panoramica del lavoro nella cultura occidentale, nella seconda si presenta il dibattito ecclesiale successivo al Concilio Vaticano II, nella terza si avanzano alcune linee di sintesi e prospettiva, anche in riferimento al mutato approccio lavorativo delle nuove generazioni.

The theological reflection inherent in work is part of the theology of terrestrial realities, inaugurated in the pre-conciliar era, relating to marriage and family, politics, and work. While the first two areas have been conspicuously taken up by recent theological inquiry, work has been less developed. The ethical problem of the condition of workers, on which the Social Doctrine of the Church has traditionally focused, must be combined with the theological investigation into the meaning of work. In this framework, the urgency to initiate a renewed reflection pertaining to the meaning of work emerges, which we want to account for in this contribution. To this end, the study is divided into three parts: the first offers an overview of work in Western culture, the second presents the ecclesial debate following the Second Vatican Council, the third presents some lines of synthesis and perspective, with reference also to the changed work approach of the new generations.
