Malgré le succès qu’elle connut tout au long du XXe siècle, la légende bremondienne de l’« humanisme dévot » de François de Sales ne résiste guère à l’examen attentif des textes. En effet, la critique traditionnelle du stoïcisme, l’élaboration d’un scepticisme original dirigé contre la persuasion intérieure revendiquée par les réformés, la remise en cause augustinienne des prétentions de la raison face au mystère de la prédestination et la promotion d’un pur amour qui implique l’engloutissement de la volonté et l’éblouissement de l’entendement, tout ou presque fait, au contraire, de l’oeuvre salésienne celle d’un maître de l’anti-humanisme du XVIIe siècle, tel que l’avait pressenti Henri Gouhier.

Despite its success throughout the twentieth century, the Bremondian legend of Francis de Sales’ “devout humanism” hardly stands up to careful scrutiny of the texts. Indeed, the traditional critique of Stoicism, the elaboration of an original skepticism directed against the inner persuasion claimed by the Reformed, the Augustinian questioning of the claims of reason in the face of the mystery of predestination and the promotion of a pure love that implies the engulfment of the will and the dazzling of the understanding, all or almost all, on the contrary, makes of the Salesian work that of a master of the seventeenth century anti-humanism of, as Henri Gouhier had foreseen.
